What to see in Ushuaia
Ushuaia is a town all the travelers want to reach. It is the final destination for many of them or the beginning of an other adventure in the Antarctica.
Therefore this city is full of tourists and I do only recommend to stay as much time as possible in the surrounding hiking and national park areas, or leave it out at all.
Again a lot of companies want to make money by showing penguins, this time from afar. So do your penguin trip at another place than Ushuaia.
Another point where they want to make money with, is by advertising the end of the world. This is just marketing, ignore it. We all know that the planet earth is round and therefore there is no end, nor a beginning (only if you think in scalar time). Furthermore it’s only the end of Argentina and therefore only important for Argentinians.
So what do I recommend to see. Well, a walk in the National Park Tierra del Fuego is nice and if you are quiet you can see some animals, like the carpenters. There is also a bigger trek of about 8-10 hours within the park. This one is only recommendable for people who know what they are doing. The park entrance is and the shuttle bus are about 50$.
Most people do a trek of three hours to the glacier Martial to have a nice view over the beagles canal. I recommend instead doing the 5 hour trek to the Cerro del Medio. You also have a nice view over the beagles canal, but less tourists. For the view you only have to walk about 1.5 hours. This trip is for free. Take some food with you and warm clothes. At a certain point it gets windy.
Another thing that most people also do, is a day trip to the Laguna Esmeralda. But the public connections are bad til not existent, so you have to hitchhike at least one way. Or rent a car.
I stayed at the Hostel Cormoranes, which is pretty up the hill, but you have a nice view and are close to the hiking trek of the Cerro del Medio. Only negative point is you have to go outside to go to the bathrooms (like on a campsite), which is not everybody’s enjoyment, as the temperature can get low in the night. The breakfast is homemade bread with jam, cereals, coffee and tea. Ask if they put lard, butter or milk in the dough.
