Alnatura Foodhaul
In this post, I would like to take a closer look at my documented shopping and the assortment at Alnatura. This is the last of five posts in which I visit a different supermarket in Switzerland every week to show the differences. The purchases are as close to reality as possible and organic when available.
Shopping List
A balanced diet also includes legumes, whole grains and nuts & seeds. These products are always in stock in my household. To avoid food waste, they do not appear in the foodhauls. Nevertheless, I try to buy products that are as similar as possible so that a comparison is representative. My shopping list includes:
- 2 types of fruit
- 3 lemons
- Herbs
- 1 x dark green leafy vegetable
- 1 x cruciferous vegetables
- other vegetables
- Plant drink
- Tofu
- vegan yoghurt
- 1 processed product
Processed Products
Alnatura sells very few processed products compared to other supermarket chains. The majority of the range is staple foods. Processed products include pizza, spring rolls, samosas, vegan meat substitutes (sausages, burgers, cold cuts), falafel, various sweet & savoury snacks, pasta, breads, dips, sauces and spreads. In addition to Alnatura’s own products, brands such as Alnavit, Migros-Bio, Provamel, Sojana, Taifun, Biedermann Bio and Arche are also represented. You have to look closely at the products because each brand is individually labelled. Except for milk and meat substitutes, the vegan products are mixed with the non-vegan products on the shelf.
Organic Products
Since Alnatura is a pure organic supermarket, you will not find any products from conventional cultivation here. This applies to the fresh assortment as well as the assortment of processed products and cosmetics. The vegetable section consists mainly of unpackaged to lightly packaged seasonal vegetables. There is a limited selection of non-regional fruit and vegetables. These include bananas, avocado, oranges, lemons, bell peppers, aubergines and tomatoes.
In addition to the Alnatura brand, Demeter products are available in the fruit and vegetable section in particular. These are rated as highly recommendable on Labelinfo. Alnatura cannot be found on Labelinfo. Most Alnatura products have the EU organic label or the organic seal from Germany. Both are rated as only partly recommendable. Products with the Bio-Knospe or from Bioland are also available. Bioland is rated as recommendable and the Knospe as excellent.
Glutenfree Products
The range of gluten-free products at Alnatura is relatively broad. The Alnavit and Alnatura brands are represented here. The range is limited to various flours, cereals, flakes, pasta, gnocchi and falafel mix. In the sweet snacks section, there are muffins, biscuits, bars, protein balls and cantuccini. Salty snacks include peanuts and popcorn, crackers, grissini and various wafers. The products are labelled gluten-free.

I am deliberately comparing Alnatura with Migros here because they have entered into a partnership and thus offer some of the same products. These are offered at the same price in both shops. Moreover, it is clear from the outset that Alnatura is more expensive than Aldi or Lidl.
Alnatura | Price | Migros | Price | Difference |
---|---|---|---|---|
Alnatura soy drink nature | 1.85 | Alnatura soy drink nature | 1.85 | 0.00 |

3 demeter lemons | 2.40 | 3 organic lemons | 2.10 | + 0.30 |
3 demeter bananas | 2.05 | 4 organic fair trade bananas | 2.05 | + 0.51 |
6 demeter apples | 4.75 | 5 organic apples | 4.20 | – 0.29 |
1 organic garlic | 1.40 | organic onions | 2.50 | – |
train ticket | 7.20 | bicycle ride | 0.00 | + 7.20 |
Total | 46.60 | 37.05 | + 12.79 |
Conclusion
Alnatura is significantly more expensive than Migros, even if you don’t have to take a train. This is partly because Alnatura also has products on offer that cannot be found at Migros. In the fruit and vegetable department, for example, these are Demeter products, which are rated slightly higher on Labelinfo than the Migros organic products. The vegan range is large. However, due to the overall size of the shop, the general offer is limited. However, you can find more special products at Alnatura, which you would otherwise rather find at the health food shop. Next week, I will compare individual products from the five supermarkets and draw a further conclusion.
I deliberately went to the Alnatura and not to an organic food shop because I am comparing supermarkets. Please let me know if you still want me to shop at the organic food shop, health food shop, etc. in the future.
I am talking about Alnatura in this post, I made the purchase at the St.Gallen branch on 30 January 2023. This post is not sponsored and therefore contains only unpaid advertising.
