Galapagos conclusion
After staying three weeks on the Galapagos islands for volunteering and tourism here is my conclusion.
I had free accommodation because of volunteering, but food and discounts were not included. This was even better for me, because the hostel owners, I was living with, were heavy fish and meat eaters. So all my free time program was on my own account. I was free in the afternoons and at weekends, which made my visiting schedule limited to visiting other islands at the weekends and visiting Santa Cruz during the week. This was the biggest disadvantage of all. Nevertheless I think I still spent less money than a person visiting the islands for a week on his own.
In total I spent 1521$ (including flight and taxes). For transportation I spent 519$, this includes all the taxis, buses, boats and the flight. As I spent four nights on Isabela and San Cristobal, I payed some accommodation there which was 78$. For the tours I spent 319$, which includes the entrance fee for the national park (100$) and I had 16$ of administrative costs for the bank taxes when getting money and the port taxes of Isabela. Furthermore I spent 319$ for food, which could have been less, but I wanted to try out some restaurants for you and I got addicted to ice cream. And I spent 144$ for souvenirs, half of it for postcards or I should say stamps (I sent 16 postcards).
If I part this sum through three, as I spent 3 weeks, I get 507$. This is clearly less than one can spend when only visiting for a week (as flight and park entrance are already 506$ together). Which leads to the fact that volunteering on the Galapagos is clearly the cheapest way of visiting the archipelago, even though you spend the same amount of money on the first sight, but you stay for a longer time.
