Excursion: Península Valdés

Most people come to Puerto Madryn to visit the Península Valdés and to sea whales and other sea animals.

But to see the whales you have to come at the right time of the year. This is between July and mid November. Whereas you can see a lot of action July-September, because of the pairing season, you will see calmer whales in October and November, because there is mother and child time and the males are gone.

For the excursion I recommend to rent a car and if you are traveling alone search people to form a group, for sharing the costs. The tours are ridiculously expensive and you have a stressful day running from one spot to another.

Another possibility is to sleep in Puerto Pirámides, the village on the Península. So you can watch the whales from the beach or the cliffs in the evening, while all the tourists have gone. This is also the best way to watch whales, by not entering their habitat. But you have to know, that it can get very windy and there is a lot of sand on the Península Valdés.

If you stay in Puerto Madryn and want to do a whale tour, it’s still the best option to organize a car and only book the whale tour. The tour I took part, was very respectful to the whales, by not following them and turning off the motor while near the whales. Whales are very curious animals and will come on their own to see, what is this (the boat). So with patience you have more luck.

But there was another boat (tour) as well on the sea and they were chasing the whales…

Onestly I don’t remember which tour it was that I took, but I organized it via my hostel, which was the HI Patagonia in Puerto Madryn. And for those who stay in Puerto Pirámides it was the big blue catamaran.

The hostel was okay, it was actually pretty good, but it seemed to me that the owner was not willing to give me information, while he gave to everybody else. The included breakfast is not vegan.
