Why you could but shouldn’t drink tap water in San Pedro de Atacama

The water in San Pedro de Atacama is considered as not drinkable, as it is in the desert, at least the guidebook says so. But…

But of course the situation is more complex. Of course you can drink it. It has nothing to do with the water quality. It’s perfect. The only issue is, that the tap water contains a lot of minerals, in fact too much minerals. This leads to the result, that your body looses it’s own minerals, when you drink this water. So it’s definitely not recommended to drink this water all your life. But for some few days… It might do.

I drank the water for two to three days and I’m still alive. But I do not recommend to drink it. You can of course do it, AT YOUR OWN RISK.
