The three day challenge: Hostel without kitchen, town without Happy Cow entry
Tupiza is the name of the destination and it sounded challenging when I found out that it has no entry on Happy Cow, especially after booking a hostel without kitchen. So I decided to make a challenge to show you, that it is definitely possible to find vegan food nevertheless.
Research
Because Happy Cow has no entries, I am happy to search some restaurants with options at least and put them on Happy Cow after my test eating.
So I searched on a ordinary restaurant searching portal, to see if I find something.
I found three entries that sounded promising:
- La Torre Italiana (is vegetarian friendly and has vegan options)
- Milan center (is vegetarian friendly, might also have vegan options)
- El Alamo (a mexican restaurant, might have vegetarian or easily veganizable food)
After the online research follows the offline research by walking through the town in the afternoon. I passed by the restaurants and had a look at the menu cards.
The Milan center is not vegan friendly, they even have milk in the pizza dough, never heard of that before!?!?!?
El Alamo is closed, even when I return after dinner…
La Torre Italiana has several vegan options, like the vegetarian tacos, the soups, sandwiches and salads. Therefore it is my choice for the first dinner. They even make the pizza without cheese, if you ask for, so even more options.
On my way through the town I also pass by the market, that has fresh fruits and not so fresh ones and vegetables. It seems to be normal in Bolivia to have a roofed permanent market. Could be my lifebuoy.
And I also discover a restaurant, la capreza, not visible online that promotes itself as a vegetarian restaurant or restaurant with vegetarian food. I decide to give it a try on my second evening.
day 1
Breakfast: oatmeal with chia, a big apple and water, while on the bus.
In between: having half of the oreos, because the bus trip was way more exhausting than expected and the rest of my roasted beans.
Dinner: three spicy bean mushroom tacos in La Torre Italiana for 3.65$
day 2
Breakfast: two little breads and a tea in the hostel (and finishing my oreos I bought for the uyuni trip and the roasted corn).
Lunch: a lot of peanuts.
Dinner: Bruschetta and vegetable soup with Quinoa in la Capreza for 7.35$.

day 3
Breakfast: none
Lunch: oatmeal with apple, chia and water
Dinner: Pizza with broccoli, spinach and eggplant (and of course without cheese)
