What to see in El Chaltén
El Chaltén is the trekking mekka of Argentina. So there are of course a lot of treks to do. Some of them are shorter and some of them can take you days. There are also good places for rock climbing.
One of the most popular is to trek to the Laguna de los Tres. You can do it in one day (8h) for which I would recommend to start at the Hosteria el Pilar in the north. Or you can combine it with the trek to the Laguna Torre, for which you start right behind the village. If you only want to go to the Laguna Torre you also can do it in one day (7h).
There are also some small treks for a beginning. One is starting at the Park information center and leads to the mirador de águila and the mirador cóndor. Of both you have a nice view on the Fitz Roy, if there are no clouds.
Another one leads to a waterfall and starts at the other end of the village. It is a nice trek through the valley with the chance to see condors.
The water in all the rivers is drinkable. Take enough money with you because there is only one ATM, and it doesn’t work with all the cards, and at weekends it’s empty. At some places you can pay with credit cards, but don’t count on it.
I stayed at Kospi Posada Bed and Breakfast. It was good value for money, especially if you have a look at the other prices. In summer time you have to book at least one week in advance. The breakfast was fresh bread, cereals and tea and coffee (not vegan).
