What to see in Guayaquil
Guayaquil is a huge city. It is for most travelers the starting point for their trip to the Galapagos Islands and the conection between coast and Mountains. There is not much to do, but it will fill your day, if you have to fill.
Las Peñas
This is probably the most beautiful part of the city. It feels more like a small town inside of Guayaquil. To walk along the river coast or climb the stairs of the cerro are the exercises one can do here. At the top of the light house the view over the city is great and worth the climb.
Plaza Bolivar
This Plaza dedicated to Simon Bolivar, the liberator of South America, is home to various Leguans and a big amount of pigeons. Unfortunately they get maltreated by the people, who are feeding them even though it is forbidden.
Malecón
The Malecón is the point (strip) to be in Guayaquil, here is where all the big parties take place. This area is very busy 8 days a week. So if you want to sleep, search accommodation that is not next to it.
Isla Santay
This island on the river Guayas is worth a day trip with the bicycle. Just rent a bike and enjoy the quietness of a car free island.
I stayed at the Manso Boutique Hostel. It is right opposite of the Malecón, which makes sleeping almost impossible. They have a pescetarian restaurant with vegetarian and vegan options, but as the waiters have no idea of vegan it is not worth it to go there. They served me a “vegan” burger with cheese. Breakfast is even worse, a non vegan “croissant” and a banana. The only plus was the bathroom, which was nice.
