Lidl Foodhaul
In this post, I would like to take a closer look at my documented shopping and the assortment at Lidl. This is the first of five posts in which I visit a different supermarket in Switzerland every week to show the differences. The purchases are as close to reality as possible and organic when available. A balanced diet also includes legumes, whole grains and nuts & seeds. These products are always stocked in my household. To avoid food waste, they do not appear in the foodhauls.
Shopping List
Nevertheless, I try to buy products that are as similar as possible so that a comparison is representative. My shopping list includes:
- 2 types of fruit
- 3 lemons
- Herbs
- 1 x dark green leafy vegetable
- 1 x cruciferous vegetables
- other vegetables
- Plant drink
- Tofu
- vegan yoghurt
- 1 processed product
Processed Products
Of course, Lidl also sells various vegan processed products, such as pizza, falafel, vegan cheese, nuggets, “fish fingers” etc.. Which you can now get in every supermarket in Switzerland. Normally, every supermarket has its house brands when it comes to these products, and Lidl is no exception. Lidl also has brands like SimplyV, Veganz, Vegan Island, Next Level, Garden Gourmet, Katjes, Alpro and Thomy. Lidl’s house brand is called Vemondo.
Organic Products
Lidl has a large selection of vegetables and fruit. Much of it is also offered in organic quality. Anyway, I had no problems making my purchase completely organic. There is also an organic section outside the vegetable department where you can get nuts and seeds, pulses, couscous, olive oil, etc. The house brand is called Bio Organic. The own brand is called Bio Organic, which is highly recommended on labelinfo. Occasionally, products from Bioland, Bio Knospe and Biotta are also available.
Glutenfree Products
There is a limited selection of gluten-free products. These include various rolls, pasta, snack balls and gluten-free pizzas. However, only the pasta, the snack balls and the gluten-free Margherita from Vemondo are vegan. The brands Bio Organic, Vemondo, Combino (Free From), Trattoria Alfredo and Grafschafter are represented here. The latter two only offer either gluten-free or vegan products. As far as I have found out, all these brands are house brands.
