What to see in Bogotá

Bogotá is the capital of Colombia not only political but also cultural. There’s tons of things to do even tough there are not so many sights. Most of it is museums and theaters. There are also a lot of free walking tours, for every taste another option. For example the Graffiti tour, cultural tour, Montserrate tour, several food tours and so on. And of course there is the Montserrate Mountain.

Montserrate

The Montserrate is the mountain right behind the historical center of Bogotá. It’s a good viewpoint and a good trip to escape the hectic city. You can hike it (beware of robbers) or take a cable cab for 20’000 Col$ (6.30$) both ways. On top there is a church and on the hill next by there is a Jesus statue. The view can be excellent, but make sure to have nice weather, a thunderstorm on top of the mountain is not what you want.

The Gold Museum

Bogotá has one of the best Gold Museum of South America. All signs explained in Spanish and English maje this trip into the history of gold procedure worth it. The entrance of only 4’000 Col$ (1.25$) and an additional audio guide for 8’000 Col$ (2.50$) make this visit also economical. However I think the audio guide is not necessary. The museum has four floors for which you should calculate at least an hour per floor.

Botero Museum

As well as in Medellín, there is also a Botero Museum. However this museum shows less of his own work compared to the one in Medellín but more of Botero’s own collection of artists such as Picasso, Monet and so on.

Mamba – Museum of Modern Art Bogotá

The Mamba has temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. It’s acompanied by a nice souvenir shop and lots of events. The entrance fee is 10’000 Col$ (3.14$).

Bogotá is an expensive city, also when it comes to food. Therefore a good hostel kitchen is life saving. I stayed at the Sayta Hostel. It’s good location and tranquility, as well as the welcoming owner are worth the stay, even though the kitchen is really basic. The beds are comfortable, the showers hot and the atmosphere is more like a home away from home.
