Excursion: Guatapé
Guatapé is a small town in the north east of Medellín. It is situated at the shore of a big reservoir. As the landscape was quite hilly, the lake has a interesting shape. Guatapé is known for its paintings on the under part of the facade, originally made for protection of it, and for the big rock close to the town, which can be climbed.
Piedra de Peñol
To go to the rock you need to take a taxi (10’000 Col$/3.15$) or a chiva (jeep colectivo for 2’000 Col$/0.65$). The entrance for the stairs is 18’000 Col$ (5.65$). For this trip you need about half a day or at least 2 hours.
Guatapé
The town itself is very nice and has several vegetarian and vegan options. There are also a lot of souvenir shops and it’s a touristy place. This is also visible when you see how many water activities are offered on the lake.
I stayed at the Casa Rosa. This is a very nice small hostel with a very friendly owner. Unfortunately there are some loud bars in the neighborhood, but they usually shut down at 12pm.
