Arepas are typical Colombian flatbreads from the Antioquia region. They are usually eaten warm for breakfast. They are often accompanied by butter, cheese or fruit and a cup of hot chocolate. You can also enjoy arepas as a starter with any topping, for example hogao and avocado.

Arepas are typical Colombian flatbreads from the Antioquia region. They are usually eaten warm for breakfast. They are often accompanied by butter, cheese or fruit and a cup of hot chocolate. You can also enjoy arepas as a starter with any topping.

Ingredients
 

  • 160 g corn flour
  • 150 ml water
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

Instructions
 

  • Mix all ingredients to a dough, let rest for 5 min.
  • Knead for 3 min. with moistened hands.
  • Divide the dough into four portions and roll into balls.
  • Heat a non-stick frying pan without oil.
  • Place the portions between two sheets of plastic wrap and press them about 1 cm thin with a flat object. Transport them directly on the foil to the pan and lift them into the pan with the spatula.
  • Fry the arepas until they are golden brown.
